2008 Simulated Emergency Test

posted Sep 19, 2008 6:33 AM by Thom Rigsby
Well, that time of year is upon us again. A time that we as amateur radio operators involved in communicating for public service get to practice our skills. Its time for the Simulated Emergency Test, or SET!

This year we are planning a one day exercise for the first Saturday in October, the 4th. While specific goals and objectives should be driven by the training and served agency needs in your county, we do have some direction from the Section.

As you will be able to see from the scoresheet, a big emphasis is being put on digital communications from the EOC (or other served agency). Five points for a digital message, 25 points for a digital message from the served agency location.

Although not a prominently emphasized, the use of NTS formatted formal message traffic is there. In all the scoring categories but one, you will see that the message needs to be in NTS format. So brush off that NTS manual and get a little practice in! And if you're having trouble coming up with a message to send, you can always send me a message saying Hi via the Mike net!

Another great way to get a few points as well as get the word out for amateur radio is to publish a press release to local media. There is a sample press release from the Section and I will be publishing a district press release hopefully by the end of the day. But don't let that discourage you from publishing your own, especially with your local papers!!

So print out that scoresheet, talk with your served agencies, and put together a test plan for your county!! If you need any help, call me, email me, or otherwise ping me and I'll be glad to give you a hand!

73,

Thom / K5JTR
District 6 EC
